Earlier on the blog I talked about doing the 21 day teatox, and that worked super well for me. However it can be quite costly to continue to order the tea. And I thought why not make it myself?
Open the Google “DIY Skinny Tea”…. and as you can imagine. AD after AD for skinnymint, skinnyteatox; so after being bombarded I decided to go the old fashioned route and research detoxifying ingredients via the Halifax Public Library.
This is what I learned about some of the ingredients inside this tea.
First ingredient of most “Skinny Teas” is Green Tea.
- Green Tea increases the metabolism; it contains polyphenol which works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories. (sounds like a win)
- Research has shown that it slows down the rise of blood sugar insulin after eating a meal. (if you drink it before or during your meal)
- It is also widely thought to kill cancer cells in general without damaging the healthy tissue around them.
- A study done provided information that it can delay the deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies carried out on mice showed that green tea protected brain cells from dying.
- Green tea is rich in vitamin C, lutein, vitamin E, and zeaxanthin which helps you eyesight.
To be honest this ingredient is the easiest to find, you can grab it at your local grocery store etc. Upon more research the better quality of Green Tea means that these ingredients haven’t been blanched out of the tea leaves. So I picked up some local green tea from World Tea House, on Argyle Street. In buying the Sencha Mint, I actually ended up combining two of the ingredients regularly found in Skinny Teas. So that made making my own “Skinny Tea” easy, but you can grab green tea loose from just about anywhere, and remember organic usually means that it keeps more of the good for you ingredients in the tea itself.
This is what I bought.

Next Ingredient on the list, Nettle Leaves. While there is not a lot of scientifically proven data on Nettle, it is said to do this; might decrease inflammation and increase urine output. OK, so weight loss aid. But where to buy? I actually found nettle leaves at Bulk Barn, but you can buy the loose tea online as well.
Next Yerba Mate, my buddy that writes the 4-Hour Body loves this tea, you can make it yourself and it can be hard to let it ferment to the right stage before it rots but I honestly went to Planet Organic and bought the tea myself. But why Yerba Mate?
- Yerba mate drinkers experience a state of alert wakefulness similar to that of coffee, but without coffee’s side effects.
- Yerba mate is so loaded with nutrition that it contains practically all the micro-nutrients needed to sustain life.
- Also assists in allergies, insulin regulation and yes you guessed it, weight loss.
Next Ingredient Dandelion: location my backyard. So they had all these fancy ways of making dandelion tea, instead I picked dandelions that did have pesticide or had been pooped on. I washed them thoroughly and left them out to dry, approx 4 hours. Then I took my grater that also has a zester on it, and zested the dandelion. Bingo Dandelion tea mush (lol). But what is dandelion good for?
Well do we see a theme here? Dandelion has a natural diuretic effect, allowing your liver to more quickly eliminate toxins.
Last ingredient, Guarana Fruit. Well I live in Canada and not Brazil so this one was harder to come by. However I did find the dried fruit extract at the Planet Organic.
This is your caffeine powerhouse, contains double the amount of caffeine per gram than coffee, can you say buzzed? It’s also used to keep food cravings at bay.
So now what you have all of these lovely ingredients but how much do you put in? This is where I got mad scientisty, as they of course don’t post their secret recipe! But I got to thinking about the ingredient list itself, which was the easiest ingredient to acquire besides dandelions? Green Tea, so I decided my Sencha Mint would be my base, green tea is also the one with the most benefits on the list. I am prepping to make a few servings of Skinny Tea. To make my life easier to use cups, and tbsp / teasp measurements.
1/2 cup Sencha Green Tea
What next? I’m going to use the Yerba Mate, looking at my bag of bought skinny tea it appears that is the next heavier used ingredient. So Caffeine and nutrients.
1/4 cup Yerba Mate
It’s a wee bit on the tart side, so I am hoping the nettle and the dandelion spruce it up. (boy am I wrong- lol)
Dandelion so this one was harder to gage as it was mushy before it dried, so I put approx 4 dandelion heads zested. Then I added 3 tbsp of Nettle, brewed (using a David’s Tea perfect spoon) to taste, and nearly spat it out… Blech!
I get where the natural sweetness of this tea comes from! Guarana.
I added 4 tbsp of the Guarana to try and counteract the tartness, and bingo once brewed ladies and gentlemen I had my Skinny Tea. But boy was I wired for sound! Be careful with this tea it packs a caffeine punch, I don’t know if I would also drink coffee on top of the tea. But that is up to you.
Once the ingredients were in an airtight container I shook it up, and used my David’s perfect spoon for one cup of tea. I steeped for 4 minutes, and whammo; Skinny Tea.
Word to the wise, if you steep it for longer it gets stronger, so good to be iced, or if you are like me can be used for a second cup!
Also this tea is mega diuretic so be sure to drink loads of water, and be ok with peeing every hour at least. Flushing helps with weight loss!
Soon, I will add the night tea which literally does 90% of the work of the skinny teatox!
ok, back soon need to pee!
