Cauliflower Garlic Fingers

I didn’t really have a recipe I kind of just went with it.

Things needed

  • 1 large cauliflower head
  • Cheese I used mozzarella, cheddar, and Monterey jack
  • Eggs  (4)
  • Fresh garlic minced
  • Italian style spices or basil/oregano
  • Parmesan
  • Parchment paper
  • Square pan, I used the rubber style one.
  • Garlic powder

Pre heat the oven to 425 degrees F. I used my food processor to make the cauliflower the consistency of rice. Plopped it in a bowl. Added 1/2 cup of Monterey jack cheese, 1 cup mozzarella, 1/2 cheddar. I started with one egg but because I had so much cauliflower I had to use 4 eggs. I also mixed on 1/2 tbsp of fresh garlic, 1/2 tbsp of Italian spice and salt and pepper. Mixed it until it was sticking together like a dough. I placed it on the parchment paper and in the pan, and put it in the oven. I left it on for at least 15 minutes because mine was thick. But I would check it at 10 minutes to be safe. I took it out of the oven and put mozzarella on top. About 2/3 a cup and hit broil. Watched it like a hawk until the cheese started to brown a little.  Took it out of the oven.

YOU HAVE TO WAIT AT LEAST 10 MINUTES FOR IT TO COOL AND SET!

While I was waiting I put parmesan and Garlic powder on the top of it.

Slice and serve! Nom!

Weekend Eats. Fuel for success.

I often get asked. What do you eat to fuel the hours of fitness you do on the weekend? This.

20170715_104806

  • 1/2 cup gluten free rolled oats with almond milk, a few sliced almonds, a few slices of dried coconut and cinnamon.
  • 2 hard boiled eggs
  • 1/3 cup frozen avocado
  • 1/2 ish cup frozen strawberries
  • In the jar ginger pea cold steeped tea pop (white tea base)

Is this alot of food? Yes. Is this a bunch of calories, probably in the 500 range. Whoa! Right? I won’t eat again til late afternoon and my next meal will be small. Balance right? Some people come from the school of thought you should be eating 5 small meals a day. For me this doesn’t work. I don’t enjoy my food and it feels like I am constantly eating.  So I do count my calories and macros and etc to make sure I’m not going wildly blind into overeating territory. Nutrition is about eating healthy but also figuring out what is right for your body.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have 3 hours of cardio to do. #releaseweekprep

Make your own Gatorade!

So yesterday I was cranky and had a wicked headache due to my sugar withdrawal, being in the fitness business I know that my body doesn’t need sugar but that it needs electrolytes. As you know most Gatorade powders contain astronomical amounts of sugar. And buying G2 powder literally breaks the bank.

So I got wise! DIY time.

What’s in Gatorade? Some random flavour, Sugar, and Salt basically…

I made a 2L bottle of Gatorade using these ingredients.

1 Tube of Crystal Light Lemon & lime water flavour

2-3 TBSP of Lemon Juice

2 Packets of Stevia, you can use more I just find Stevia really has an aftertaste.

1 small teaspoon of “No Salt” (Potassium), it is call New Salt.

1 small TEASPOON of Regular Salt

It’s easy to go heavy handed on the salt so be careful!

Mix in a 2L bottle with water, and there you have it Gatorade. Now if you want different flavours you could used different Crystal Light packets.

DIY: Skinny Teatox

Earlier on the blog I talked about doing the 21 day teatox, and that worked super well for me. However it can be quite costly to continue to order the tea. And I thought why not make it myself?

Open the Google “DIY Skinny Tea”…. and as you can imagine. AD after AD for skinnymint, skinnyteatox; so after being bombarded I decided to go the old fashioned route and research detoxifying ingredients via the Halifax Public Library.

This is what I learned about some of the ingredients inside this tea.

First ingredient of most “Skinny Teas” is Green Tea.

  • Green Tea increases the metabolism; it contains polyphenol  which works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories. (sounds like a win)
  • Research has shown that it slows down the rise of blood sugar insulin after eating a meal. (if you drink it before or during your meal)
  • It is also widely thought to kill cancer cells in general without damaging the healthy tissue around them.
  • A study done provided information that it can delay the deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies carried out on mice showed that green tea protected brain cells from dying.
  • Green tea is rich in vitamin C, lutein, vitamin E, and zeaxanthin which helps you eyesight.

To be honest this ingredient is the easiest to find, you can grab it at your local grocery store etc. Upon more research the better quality of Green Tea means that these ingredients haven’t been blanched out of the tea leaves. So I picked up some local green tea from World Tea House, on Argyle Street. In buying the Sencha Mint, I actually ended up combining two of the ingredients regularly found in Skinny Teas. So that made making my own “Skinny Tea” easy, but you can grab green tea loose from just about anywhere, and remember organic usually means that it keeps more of the good for you ingredients in the tea itself.

This is what I bought.

Next Ingredient on the list, Nettle Leaves. While there is not a lot of scientifically proven data on Nettle, it is said to do this;  might decrease inflammation and increase urine output. OK, so weight loss aid. But where to buy? I actually found nettle leaves at Bulk Barn, but you can buy the loose tea online as well.

Next Yerba Mate, my buddy that writes the 4-Hour Body loves this tea, you can make it yourself and it can be hard to let it ferment to the right stage before it rots but I honestly went to Planet Organic and bought the tea myself. But why Yerba Mate?

  • Yerba mate drinkers experience a state of alert wakefulness similar to that of coffee, but without coffee’s side effects.
  • Yerba mate is so loaded with nutrition that it contains practically all the micro-nutrients needed to sustain life.
  • Also assists in allergies, insulin regulation and yes you guessed it, weight loss.

Next Ingredient Dandelion: location my backyard. So they had all these fancy ways of making dandelion tea, instead I picked dandelions that did have pesticide or had been pooped on. I washed them thoroughly and left them out to dry, approx 4 hours. Then I took my grater that also has a zester on it, and zested the dandelion. Bingo Dandelion tea mush (lol). But what is dandelion good for?

Well do we see a theme here? Dandelion has a natural diuretic effect, allowing your liver to more quickly eliminate toxins.

Last ingredient, Guarana Fruit. Well I live in Canada and not Brazil so this one was harder to come by.  However I did find the dried fruit extract at the Planet Organic.

This is your caffeine powerhouse, contains double the amount of caffeine per gram than coffee, can you say buzzed? It’s also used to keep food cravings at bay.

So now what you have all of these lovely ingredients but how much do you put in? This is where I got mad scientisty, as they of course don’t post their secret recipe! But I got to thinking about the ingredient list itself, which was the easiest ingredient to acquire besides dandelions? Green Tea, so I decided my Sencha Mint would be my base, green tea is also the one with the most benefits on the list.  I am prepping to make a few servings of Skinny Tea. To make my life easier to use cups, and tbsp / teasp measurements.

1/2 cup Sencha Green Tea

What next? I’m going to use the Yerba Mate, looking at my bag of bought skinny tea it appears that is the next heavier used ingredient. So Caffeine and nutrients.

1/4 cup Yerba Mate

It’s a wee bit on the tart side, so I am hoping the nettle and the dandelion spruce it up. (boy am I wrong- lol)

Dandelion so this one was harder to gage as it was mushy before it dried, so I put approx 4 dandelion heads zested. Then I added 3 tbsp of Nettle, brewed (using a David’s Tea perfect spoon) to taste, and nearly spat it out… Blech!

I get where the natural sweetness of this tea comes from! Guarana.

I added 4 tbsp of the Guarana to try and counteract the tartness, and bingo once brewed ladies and gentlemen I had my Skinny Tea. But boy was I wired for sound! Be careful with this tea it packs a caffeine punch, I don’t know if I would also drink coffee on top of the tea. But that is up to you.

Once the ingredients were in an airtight container I shook it up, and used my David’s perfect spoon for one cup of tea. I steeped for 4 minutes, and whammo; Skinny Tea.

Word to the wise, if you steep it for longer it gets stronger, so good to be iced, or if you are like me can be used for a second cup!

Also this tea is mega diuretic so be sure to drink loads of water, and be ok with peeing every hour at least. Flushing helps with weight loss!

Soon, I will add the night tea which literally does 90% of the work of the skinny teatox!

ok, back soon need to pee!

BODYJAM… is coming T-Minus 3 Days

glee cannon

Hey Kids,

There is a new* program that is making it’s re-LAUNCH at Goodlife Fitness Park Lane. It is called BODYJAM, what is BODYJAM you ask? BODYJAM is the cardio workout where you are free to enjoy the sensation of dance. An addictive fusion of the latest dance styles and hottest new sounds puts the emphasis as much on having fun as on breaking a sweat. (Click here for 10 things to expect at your first BODYJAM class)

Why is this so exciting? A couple of reasons if you do not like Zumba but like to dance, this might be the class for you! It is a Les Mills program so it is standardized globally, if you go to a JAM class in Halifax or Boston it should be nearly identical by releases. The training for instructors is rigorous, it’s a two day 8+ hour a day training session with a national trainer, then the instructor has 3 months to submit a near perfect video in order to pass their training and become fully certified. With all the time, effort & money put into the instructors training they ensure that only the best are teaching this program. Only the most passionate. Because that is what it takes to deliver this program.

Dance programs have become really mainstream and can be costly to attend on a regular basis, so choosing the right one for you is important. How can you tell if you are a BODY-JAMMER? A simple questionnaire can help out.

  1. Do you like to dance?
  2. Do you like to dance to the hottest music on the planet?
  3. Would you like to learn the coolest moves on the planet?
  4. Would you like to burn up to 545 cals dancing and not realizing you are working out?
  5. Do you like the lights off and the music loud?

Did you answer yes to any of the above? Then you may just be a Jammer. But don’t take my word for it. Come check it out.

Halifax Goodlife Park Lane, Friday September 11th 630PM.

*BODYJAM was originally in Halifax, approx 5-6 years ago, so it’s not brand new to Halifax, and has been apart of the LMI family for 10 years.

Slackers are gonna slack….

So I haven’t posted since April… oops. I have been a very busy gal. I do have lots to say, maybe too much.

I’ve been off clean eating, and off real lifing (not having a full time job will do that to you) and off blogging. But it’s time to clean it up. Today re-starts the year for me, so I am back to the books, back to the clean eats, and back to the gym! Over the next couple months I will do a rewind post every so often to fill you in on the fitness things I have learned, or feel you would find interesting.

I am writing this post, enjoying my Skinny Tea Tox Day tea, which will be followed by the night tea tonight, and more than likely a salt water cleanse on Thursday AM.. ek! In hopes of resetting my body in the most efficient fashion. (aka losing the water weight). I will let you know how that goes!

Talk to you soon fitness freaks!

Shut up and Dance

Happy International Dance Day!

What are you doing to get out there and dance? Dancing comes in a variety of forms so don’t be pigeon-holed into thinking that the little groove down you do in your car or in your office when your favourite song comes on doesn’t count; because it does. Everyone dances, and everyone knows how to dance. It’s a human instinct given to us long ago (think the Greeks) you dance when you are happy. This is where WINE came from people!! They danced and squished grapes = wine! Ok, my history may not be perfect but you have seen Disney’s Fantasia?

Shameless plug*** warning!

Did you know that “dance cardio” is not just for dancers? Have you ever wanted to just lose it close your eyes and let the music move you. There are these beautiful classes sneakily hidden in your Goodlife class listings called SH’BAM, Zumba & BODYJAM. Stuck in between the BODYPUMPs, and the BODYCOMBATs. You also don’t have to be female to go to one of these classes. It was actually Josh Keenum, and this wild jump turn combination that starts at 7:11 on this video that made me fall in love with BODYJAM.

Why dance, my co-worker and fellow SH’SISTER, has some suggestions as to why you can catch her article 4 reasons why you should be doing dance style work outs here.

And before I go…. look at how much fun it is to “shut up and dance”

End of week one with Skinny Teatox

Good morning folks! Here’s my week check in; on the scale down 7lbs. And clothes are fitting better! Here is my before and after.

I have to say the results are crazy! But I have also cleaned up my diet a bunch restricted carbs, no added sugar and limiting fruit to once a day if at all.

Sidebar: the night tea is powerful, so heed the warning of needing to be near a bathroom for at least 16 hours after drinking the tea!

Happy Friday

Cheers Michelle

Update on my Skinny Teatox

Here are my before shots, sitting at a solid 154 lbs. If anyone says I am fat, I will punch them out! (he he)

AM tea review:

It’s really good, and I feel like it wakes me up. NOTE: if you are a David’s Tea drinker, “a perfect spoon” is too much for a cup of this tea. I half the amount of the perfect spoon. Otherwise it’s just wasteful. No side effects of this one, feel energized and alert.

PM tea review:

So I am sometimes my own worst enemy, I also have a very slow moving waste removing system. I can take up to 2 days to pass something. (side effect of a celiac) I took some tea Sunday night, and it didn’t really do anything. So I figured that maybe I didn’t steep it long enough etc. So I took another tea again Monday night…Well big mistake there! Yesterday was kind of a public washroom nightmare, and I was pretty gassy. I was stuck with these symptoms all day. So I highly do not recommend taking this tea 2 nights in a row! Listen to the instructions. Otherwise you’ll regret it!

Weight change immeasurable.. ~-.5 but I weighed myself last night, and have already eaten this am, so it’s not a good judge. I will weigh in Friday. And let you know how the rest of the Teatox goes!

Oh, and the Chocolate Energy Tea! Is delicious, it doesn’t curb my cravings for sweets as much as I thought it would. I still wanted to eat all of the sugar yesterday. But it is yummy and it does give you a pick me up right when you need it.

Cheers Michelle
